Stoney End Harps

Harps

The Celtic Harp is almost unchanged since the 11th century. Some mediaeval harps had a very slim body, but the famous Brian Boru harp has the same shape as the harps we sell today. Early harps had bodies carved from solid wood, and brass strings, and were diatonic, only playing in one key. Nowadays it is usual to use a softwood soundboard, and gut or Nylon strings, and to change key, the pitch of each string can be adjusted with semitone levers. The concert harp was developed from the Celtic Harp, or Clarsach, and features increased tension on the strings, a greater range of notes, and pedal mechanisms.

Stoney End Harps

All Hobgoblin's Harp & Dulcimer sales in the USA are dealt with by Stoney End the manufacturers themselves.

Stoney End Harps are made in the USA from beautiful and finely figured walnut, with thin resonant soundboards made from a special quality laminate. The strings are spaced exactly as in a full sized concert harp, and the Loveland semitone mechanisms are both accurate and simple to use. These harps are all strikingly good looking, and have a really lively and bright response.

All Stoney End harps have a similar construction. We use solid Walnut or Cherry wood for the structural frame and pinblock. The plywood side and back panels are inserted into dado cuts in the solid corners and the base. This makes a durable and strong, yet very lightweight harp body. Our soundboards are the heart of our good sound. We use a Finnish aircraft grade 3 millimeter Birch laminate. This provides exceptional strength with low weight and allows us to make cutouts on both the bottom and top ends of the string band. This opens up the soundboard and makes it free to vibrate over its entire surface, something that thicker, stiffer, more confined soundboards cannot do. No other small harp is able to produce the good sound that ours do. We believe that we produce harps with the best combination of good sound, and affordable price anywhere in the world today.

When you order one of our harps, you can choose between American Black Walnut or Cherry wood. Both are finished with 3 clear coats of Deft brand Nitrocellulose Laquer. Most of our harps are strung with Nylon, but any of them can be strung with wire for a clear bell-like sound. Zither tuning pins are standard on the lap harps, but tapered pins are fitted on the floor standing models. We install Loveland sharping levers made by Bob Bunker. We believe these are the finest levers on the market today.

Stoney End Harps
  • GR1141
Stoney End "Eve" model Portable Lap Harp. This little harp sounds great. 22 nylon strings, walnut finish.
The Eve Harp is our most popular model. It is a 22-string lap or knee harp, tuned from G to G. The lowest C is middle C on a piano. Because of its small size, this harp can be taken almost everywhere (even in the overhead compartment of an aircraft), yet it is capable of expressive music. The limitation of the three octave range is made up for by the portability of this sweet lightweight harp. This harp is 30 inches high, 17 inches deep, and 10 inches wide and weighs 7 pounds.

  • GR1142
6 Lever "Eve" Lap Harp, as above but with 6 Loveland semitone mechanisms on the C and F strings.

  • GR1143
22 Lever "Eve" Lap Harp, as GR1141, but with a full set of Loveland semitone mechanisms, giving a fully chromatic range.

  • GR1144
Stoney End "Brittany" Lap Harp, Low headed 6 lever model otherwise similar to GR1142
The Brittany harp is our new low head version of our popular 22-string lap harp. The main difference is the very traditional Irish shape to the pillar and pinblock. It is almost impossible to see this harp and not fall in love with its delightful curves. The harp has slightly heavier strings and weighs a little more than the Eve Harp.

  • GR1146
Stoney End "Lorraine" model Clarsach, a very striking and attractive high headed design in walnut finish. 29 nylon strings from 5th octave G to G’’, A full set of Loveland levers is fitted giving a fully chromatic range, and this model has tapered tuning pins. complete with 4 screw-in legs, tuning key & spare strings.
While the lap harp is more portable, it is actually easier for a beginner to play the larger 4-octave Lorraine Harp. It has 7 more low strings (a full octave) and stands on its 4 attractive removeable turned legs. The additional range in the base gives you those rich low notes. This harp is 48 inches high (56 inches with the legs), 23 inches deep, 13 inches wide, and weighs 15 pounds.

  • GR1147
Stoney End "Braunwen", as GR1146, but with a Low Head design.
Along with our new version of the lap harp, we have an Irish Low head version of the 4 octave Floor harp. This harp has delighted everyone who has tried it. The strings are shorter, so this harp uses 12 wound nylon strings but still has the same G to G tuning of all our other harps. With this harp, we have introduced a new removable base that perfectly compliments the styling of the harp. This harp is 42 inches high (48 with the base), 27 inches deep, 13 inches wide, and weighs 17 pounds.
