Unsurprisingly the Cuatro in Puerto Rico orginally had 4 strings and does stil exist in parts of the south. The modern version was made famous in the 1930s by Ladislao Martínez. It seems likely that imported Mandolins, Bandurrias or Laudes must have influenced the newer 10 string double course instrument.
