Definition: Single-tube, cylindrical, single reed instrument. A seventeenth century ancestor of the clarinet, it has a recorder type body with a single reed mouthpiece. Whistles made out of a rolled up and soldered sheet of metal, with a wooden plug tend to sound very breathy. This type of whistle offers a different range of sounds to the other methods of construction. Conical bore instruments tend to have a more focussed sound.
